The actual cost of a dental checkup depends on your location and other factors, such as dental issues that the experienced dentist will spot during the process. An additional fee will be charged if you require x-rays.

According to the 2020 national dental fee survey, the average cost of dental checkups and cleanings, including fluoride treatment for adults in Australia, can cost up to $312. 

Since the Australian Government does not cover the majority of dental care clinic services, most costs for these procedures must be paid out-of-pocket.

Both children and adults are treated in public dental clinics throughout the country. Adults need a Health Care Card or a Centrelink Pensioner Concession Card. Still, the rules and requirements vary in every state and territory. These may include dental emergency services or referrals to specialists for orthodontic treatment in hospitals. 

However, Medicare only covers some treatments for kids and adults who meet the requirements. Under the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, eligible children aged 2 to 17 will receive a $1,000 benefit every two years for basic dental services, including check-up appointments, cleaning, x-rays, sealing cracked natural teeth, fillings, root canal treatment, and extractions. It does not cover orthodontic or cosmetic treatments as well as any dental procedures provided in the hospital.

Each state offers different services, and you may have to wait up to one year or more before receiving dental services. 

Although it’s never too early to start building a great relationship with your child’s dentist, there are some guidelines that can help you know when it’s time to visit the dentist. The Australian & New Zealand Society Of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children should see a dentist at least once a year from age 1 to 2 years old, twice a year from age 2 to 6 years old, and once every six months from age 6 to 12 years old.
